Beware of What Is Called “April Fool’s Lie”

A Very Important Warning: Beware of What Is Called “April Fool’s Lie

Know that Allah, the Almighty, says:

Which means: “O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are truthful.”

— Surah At-Tawbah, Ayah 119

Allah, the Most Glorious and Exalted, has commanded us to do good and forbidden us from evil. Likewise, His noble Messenger was sent as a teacher to guide people toward virtuous and noble morals. As the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Indeed, I was sent to perfect noble character.”

Among the great virtues that Allah has commanded and that the Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasised is truthfulness, while one of the most wicked traits that he forbade is lying. Know that lying is forbidden, whether in seriousness or in jest, whether to make people laugh or for any other reason. It remains prohibited. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said about lying:

“Lying is not accepted whether in seriousness or in jest.”

And he also said:

“Woe to the one who speaks and lies to make people laugh—woe to him, then woe to him.”

One of the things that must be warned against is what some people call “April Fool’s Lie”. Forbidden lying remains prohibited whether it occurs on the first of April or any other day. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“It is not permissible for a Muslim to frighten another Muslim.”

Moreover, a true Muslim would never say phrases such as “Lying is the spice of men”, as it suggests that lying is an admirable trait, which contradicts Islamic teachings. Likewise, the saying “Shame on the one who tells the truth” is clear disbelief, as it disparages truthfulness, which is a virtue in Islam, and praises lying, which is condemned. Both of these statements oppose the teachings of Islam, and we seek refuge in Allah from such misguidance.

Honesty and Lying

Al-Bukhariyy and Muslim related that the Prophet, may Allah raise his rank, said what means: “Truthfulness leads to piety and piety leads to Paradise. The Muslim who continues to be truthful will then be recorded in the book of Allah as a truthful person. Lying leads to bad deeds and bad deeds lead to hellfire. The Muslim who continues to lie will be recorded in the book of Allah as a liar.”

In this honorable saying, the Prophet, sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam, urged us to speak the truth and warned us against lying.

Lying is saying what is different from the truth. This act is forbidden, whether it is done in a serious or in a joking manner.

If a Muslim knowingly says what is different from the truth, then he has fallen into the sin of lying.

An example of a lie is for a person to say “I hit that person,” when the truth is that he did not do it.

If a lie causes harm to another Muslim, then this is a great sin.

So, it is important to train your tongue to speak the truth and avoid lying. Lying is an ugly habit. There are many people who have the habit of lying a lot, making others call them liars and be unable to trust them.

Remember that our Prophet, may Allah raise his rank, never said a lie in his life, making his people call him “as-Sadiq al-Amin,” which means “the Truthful and Trustworthy.”

Beware of what people call an “April Fool’s joke,” as many people have been harmed or hurt due to many lies that people spread on the 1st day of April.

May Allah protect us from putting ourselves in such dishonest activities and may Allah give us the strength to withstand such practices when they tend to infect our Muslim society.

once more again:

Dear brothers and sisters in Islam

Firstly, I would like to warn you from what people call an “April Fool’s Joke” as many people have been harmed or hurt due to many lies that people spread on the 1st day of April.

One of the sins of the tongue is lying. It is to utter a false statement while knowing that what one is saying is not the truth. It is sinful (haram) whether done seriously or jokingly.

The Prophet ﷺ said: <<Lying is not valid, whether one is talking seriously or jokingly>>. (Narrated by al-Bayhaqiyy).

The Prophet ﷺ also said what means:<<Adhere to truthfulness as truthfulness leads to piety and piety leads to Paradise. The Muslim who continues to be truthful will then be recorded as a truthful person. Do not ever lie, because lying leads to very abhorrent sins, and those in turn lead to Hellfire. One keeps on lying and seeks to do that until one is recorded as a liar.>> (Narrated by Ibn Majah).

The Prophet urged us to speak the truth and warned us against lying. If a Muslim knowingly says what is different from the truth, then he has fallen into the sin of lying. An example of a lie is for a person to say, ‘I hit that person’ when the truth is that he did not do it. If a lie causes harm to another Muslim, then this is a major sin.

There are many cases that are among the sins of the tongue and fall under the category of lying. They include: swearing by Allah to a lie, giving a false testimony, and fabricating a saying about Allah and His Prophet.

The Prophet ﷺ said what means: <<Falsely attributing something to me is not like falsely attributing something to anyone else. Let the one who knowingly lies about me prepare himself for his place in Hellfire.>> (Narrated by Muslim).

Attributing a false matter to Allah may result in blasphemy, like if one claims that Allah made something halal when one knows that it is haram, or vice versa.

So, it is important to train your tongue to speak the truth and to avoid lying. Lying is an ugly habit. There are many people who have the habit of lying, making others call them liars and unable to trust them.

May Allah protect us from putting ourselves in such dishonest activities that infect our society. Ameen
